An intimate crowd turned out for a benefit concert on Feb. 16 in Turner Chapel, featuring Edison Glass, The War and The Brandon Batson Band.
The event, sponsored by the Baptist Student Union and university radio station WNGR, came about after some students on the BSU council attended an Edison Glass concert where they learned about the non-profit organization called Love146 and decided to host a fundraiser.
"When the council met back up again before the fall semester, the boys told us about Love146. And, they mentioned, 'Wouldn't it be great if we could get Edison Glass to play a show on campus?'" said Katie Player, BSU Program Chair.
Player got in touch with Edison Glass' management about playing a benefit concert at North Greenville, and they agreed.
BSU and WNGR donated all the money for Edison Glass to play, so all proceeds raised are going to Love146. This includes all of the ticket sales from the event, Love146 T-shirts, the penny war between classes and selling DVDs of videos shown in Fusion over the past year.
So far approximately $1,200, not including t-shirt sales, has been raised to go directly to Love146. T-shirts are going to continue being sold, sign up in the cafeteria for one for $14.
Love146 is a non-profit organization founded in 2002 that, according to their website, "works toward the abolition of child sex trafficking and exploitation through prevention and aftercare." It was co-founded by Rob Morris, Lamont Hiebert, Desirea Rodgers and Caroline Hamn after they took a trip to Southeast Asia and witnessed first-hand young children being sold for sex.
"This year at BSU our theme has been love, and we look at sex trafficking as a perversion of that love," said Nathan Willis, BSU Media Chair.
BSU is also planning to bring a speaker from Love146 this semester to help raise awareness about the sex trafficking problem.
