The Lady Crusader basketball team has been a scoring machine, collecting 181 points in two games last week and winning four of their last five games.
They came out against Morris College on Valentine's Day and shot the lights out in the first half, hitting 69 percent of their shots from the field and held a somewhat comfortable lead the entire half. NGU seemed to falter a little bit with Morris cutting their lead to eight points with less than five minutes to play. The Lady Crusaders then went on a 20-2 run to close out the half and go into half time with a 26-point lead 53-27.
They picked up right where they left off in the first half and stretched their lead to 39, their largest of the season.
Amanda Milner, senior psychology, recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Eboni Davis, sophomore biology, scored 16 points and dished out five assists. Robin Warner, junior marketing, added 12 points, while Nikki Wood, sophomore psychology, and Mindy Greenstone, senior early childhood education, each chipped in 11 points. Every Lady Crusader scored as they blew out Morris College 96-61.
The next game came against Allen University on Feb. 16, and it seemed like a mirror image of their game against Morris College on Thursday.
Milner again led the way with 27 points as NGU defeated Allen University on the road 85-51. It was the Lady Crusaders second 30-point win in as many games.
Whitney Smith, sophomore accounting/business administration, added 12 points for NGU, while Davis chipped in nine points.
The men's team traveled to Brevard College Feb. 13 in a nail biter.
The Crusaders shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half and took a seemingly comfortable 28-19 lead into the locker room.
The second half saw NGU lose their first half lead as well as four others. After eight total lead changes, the Crusaders lead 52-49 with 13 seconds left. The Tornados threw up a three and tied the game at 52 to go to overtime.
A back and forth overtime saw the Tornados pull ahead 57-56 with 1:15 to go. With two more lead changes, the Crusaders were down 59-58 with 32 seconds left. Kyler Vitko, sophomore undecided, hit a lay-up to put the Crusaders up 60-59 with 18 seconds remaining. Adam Griggs, senior accounting, hit one of two free throws to extend the Crusaders' lead to its final of 61-59.
Brevard laid a brick in a last ditch effort with two seconds left to seal NGU's sixth victory of the year.
North Greenville was led by Austin Randel, sophomore marketing, who had a game-high 19 points, and Griggs with 16 points.
The men's team closes out their home schedule Feb. 23 against Mars Hill at 4 p.m. The women's team is hosting the NCCAA South Regional tournament, which concludes tonight at 7 p.m. in Hayes Gymnasium.
