North Greenville's club baseball team was swept by Appalachian State University in a doubleheader on Feb. 16.
They were defeated 12-6 in the first game and also fell to Appalachian State 14-4 in the second game.
Their non-conference record fell to 2-4 following the Appalachian State games.
Combining the games of the doubleheader, Chris Comstock, senior youth ministries, stood out hitting 2-for-3 at the plate. Matthew Trotter, junior history, was 2-for-6 with four RBIs, and Ben Williamson, freshman biology, went 1-for-3 with four walks and two runs scored.
"We didn't play to our potential," said outfielder Guy Bennett, sophomore sport management. "We made some errors and didn't hit like we should have."
The Crusaders were scheduled to travel to play Davidson on Friday and then face them again in a doubleheader on Saturday, but the games were cancelled due to inclement weather. A make-up date has not been scheduled. The three-game series would have been the first conference game of the season.
"We haven't seen Davidson play, but if we play up to our potential we can hang with anybody," Bennett said.
Some players are standing out early this season. Zach Templeton, freshman sport management, and Corey Gardner, freshman undecided, have pitched complete games. Trotter is leading the team in hitting with a .438 batting average and 11 RBIs, and Williamson is leading Division II in homeruns with two.
"We have been having fun, and everyone is enjoying it," Bennett said about the team's first season. "We have been doing what we set out to do, which is honoring God on and off the field, having fun, hustling and playing to the best of our ability."
