The men's golf team finished fifth overall at the Johnny Palmer Invitational Feb. 18 and 19 in New London, N.C. The tournament was the team's first of the spring season and was held at the Old North State Club golf course, the second highest rated course in North Carolina.

The weather conditions were less than ideal. Over an inch of rain fell on the day before the tournament began, making the course soggy and causing balls to travel farther than normal. On top of the rain, the wind blew an average of 20 mph on both days of the tournament, with gusts up to 35 mph.

"I thought we played really well under the circumstances," said coach Jeff Pitillo. "It was a great course. It was just a shame the weather was so bad, but I thought all the guys played really well."

The Crusaders shot a combined 320 on Feb. 18 and 316 on Feb. 19 to finish 30 shots out of first place.

Brad Caldwell, sophomore Christian studies, led the Crusaders with scores of 78 and 75 for a total of 153. He tied for seventh overall. Brandon Coggins, sophomore elementary education tied for 23rd with an 82-77, and Tyler Batts, freshman business administratrion, tied for 27th with an 80-80. Richard Smith, freshman business administration, shot an 80-84 and tied for 39th, and Harrison Martin, freshman international business, shot an 86-85 and finished 53rd.

"It was really wet conditions, but I was pleased overall with how we played," Pitillo said.

The Johnny Palmer Invitational was the first of five tournaments that North Greenville will play in this season. The Crusaders will travel on March 3 Salisbury, N.C., to compete in the Richard Rendleman Invitational at Catawba College.
