On March 10, the North Greenville University softball team returned to the field against Mars Hill in a doubleheader at Ponder Park. Mars Hill swept the Crusaders by scores of 5-3 and 8-0.
In game one, Tia LaFreniere, sophomore outdoor leadership, hit a three-run home run to centerfield in the top of the second inning, but it was not enough as Mars Hill retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning and never looked back. Kristyn Smith, freshman elementary education, pitched a complete game and took the 5-3 loss.
Mars Hill came out strong in the nightcap, scoring six runs in their first at-bat. Katie Eargle, senior interdisciplinary studies, pitched only 1/3 inning and gave up six runs. NGU only mustered three hits and was shut out 8-0.
On March 11, North Greenville played Spartanburg Methodist College in another doubleheader.
North Greenville dropped the first game 7-2. The Crusaders were ahead in the third inning after Lindsey Eargle, junior sport management, singled to drive in Shealy Broome, sophomore undecided, and Ashley Warlick, junior interdisciplinary studies. SMC came back in the fifth and seventh innings with three more runs each for the win. Christina Shin, junior business administration, led the Crusaders at the plate with two hits.
In the second game, NGU fought hard and came out with a 3-2 win. Smith pitched a complete game, only giving up two runs on five hits. Hope Brewer, sophomore sport management, scored on an SMC error in the bottom of the fifth inning to put NGU on the board, and then Bridget Watson, junior business administration, singled in Broome and Jessica Turner, sophomore mathematics/business administration. Shin led NGU at the plate again with a 2-for-3 game, and Watson led the team with two RBIs.
North Greenville hit the road for Tennessee March 13 to take on Milligan College in yet another doubleheader.
The Crusaders won the first game with a final score of 4-3, but then lost the second game 3-1 before heading back down to the foothills.
March 15, North Greenville was scheduled to play Presbyterian College at home, but the game was rained out and has not been re-scheduled.
The next home game is scheduled for tomorrow at 2 p.m. against Piedmont with more home games on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Brenau and Tuesday at 2 p.m. against Emmanuel.
