North Greenville Mass Communications students returned from the National Religious Broadcasting Convention with the most significant awards won in the past nine years of attending.

Twenty-four students and four faculty members attended the NRB at the Gaylord Opryland Convention Center in Nashville, Tenn.

A group of four students won first place in the 3DV challenge at the conference.

This was the first year NRB offered this competition. The groups were required to create a five-minute film from beginning to end at the convention site.

The four students in the group from NGU were Nathan Willis, Mike Wallace, Brad Cole, and Shawn Stom.

"It was amazing to see our film stretched out on a screen in front of thousands," Brad Cole, junior interdisciplinary studies.

"They were at a disadvantage because they were volunteers - unlike most of the other schools - so their time to work on it was about half the time of the others. But they won!" said Catherine Ridley, sophomore broadcast media.

They were given about $28,000 worth of equipment for the school's station.

"It was really encouraging too that the judges approached us afterward and applauded us and encouraged us to pursue Hollywood," said Shawn Stom, sophomore broadcast media.

NGU competed against Southeastern University, Spring Arbor University and Palm Beach Atlantic University. Several professional film producers from around the country judged the videos in front of a live audience.

"It was like 'American Idol' style. They were up on stage and heard critiques from the judges right on the spot," said Dr. Linwood Hagin, head of the mass communications department.

North Greenville impressed the judges by carrying the story through to its conclusion, which the other groups were not able to do.

Some of the equipment NGU won was a Sony HDV camera and TV automation software.
