Alabama's Mychildren Mybride's unleashes a powerful blend of metal and hardcore on their debut album Unbreakable, which released on February 26. This newcomer to Solid State Records has actually been a well known name in the southeast for a few years now. They toured with big name bands, including Whitechapel, before they inked their deal with Solid State.
Oftentimes, metalcore gets a negative connotation due to purists and the substantial amount of cookie-cutter bands that give the genre a bad name. However, MCMB stands out among the rest with its perfect concoction of metal and hardcore.
The music changes from the blood pumping blast beats of metal to the breakdowns that are common among current hardcore outfits.
The music itself is not the only thing on the record to sample both genres. Matthew Hastings' voice differs from many other vocalists of today. He showcases a range from hardcore grunts to intense metal highs and lows, and then joins the other band members in group vocals.
The record never gets boring. Each song has its own personality that includes technical drumming and double-bass throbbing throughout "Faithless" to the Halo inspired "Headshot."
The lyrics throughout Unbreakable highlight another talent of Hastings'. "Calm the storms and I will walk the sea!" from "Faithless" is just one of the many lines in the song that go back and forth about faith or a lack thereof.
The top songs of the record include: "Faithless," "On the Wings of Integrity," "The Machinist," "Boris the Blade," and "Circle the Sky." The eleven song strong Unbreakable showcases the talents of Mychildren Mybride and merges two powerful genres into a seamless single fast and heavy one.
