The North Greenville University softball team has had a busy week since last Monday, playing seven games, including three doubleheaders.
On March 24, the Crusaders took on Milligan College and split the doubleheader. In the first game the Crusaders were down 1-0 in the fifth inning when Bridget Watson, junior business, hit a solo home run to tie the game. In the same inning, Christina Shin, sophomore business, scored to put the Crusaders up 2-1. The team held on for the win, with pitcher Kristyn Smith, freshman undecided, striking out four batters in seven innings.
The next day, Emmanuel swept a doubleheader against the NGU by scores of 6-1 and 12-3. Shealy Broome, sophomore undecided, Tia Lafreniere, sophomore outdoor leadership, and Katie Eargle, senior education, each scored runs for the Crusaders.
On March 27, the Crusaders traveled to Piedmont College and split a doubleheader, with a winning score of 9-8 and a losing score of 10-2.
In the first game, the Crusaders were up 6-0 by the third inning. After the fourth and fifth innings, PC had managed to tie the game 6-6. In the sixth inning the Crusaders got one more run to lead 7-6, but PC answered with 2 runs for their final lead of the game. In the seventh inning the Crusaders scored two more runs and took the win. Krista Yeoman, senior marketing, pitched in the final three innings, striking out two batters.
In the second game the Crusaders jumped ahead in the first inning with a score of 1-0, but PC came back and pulled out the 10-2 victory. Allison Bailey, sophomore undecided, led the Crusaders for the day, batting 5-for-7, two runs, and two RBI.
On Saturday, March 29, the Crusaders went down to Newberry and took home a win. The Crusaders got ahead early in the second inning scoring three runs. NGU loaded the bases with two singles and a hit batter and scored due to a walk and two fielder's choices. The Crusaders scored again in the top of the fourth and scored three more runs in the top of the fifth, bringing the lead to 7-0. Even though the Indians fought hard for a comeback, scoring four runs in two innings, Crusaders still pulled out the win 7-4. Smith pitched the entire game and allowed only two earned runs.
"Newberry was a big win for us, we played well and hit the ball hard," said Ty Porter, assistant softball coach. "We starting to really play together, and I'm seeing more positive attitudes going up to the plate, which makes for higher batting averages. If we finish strong, we'll get invited to the NCCAA Regional Tournament, and that's something worth fighting for."
NGU will take the field today at 2 p.m. at Emmanuel College in a doubleheader.
