Have you ever lost a loved one to cancer or know someone who has? Relay for Life events occur all across the country throughout the year and visit South Carolina in the spring.

According to the Relay for Life Web site, "Almost 75 communities in South Carolina hold Relay For Life events, which provide the opportunity for everyone to participate personally in the fight against cancer."

A couple of upcoming marches nearby offer an excellent opportunity for any interested students to participate in the ceremonies and walks in honor and support of those dealing with cancer. On April 18, a march will begin at 7 p.m. from Travelers Rest High School. On May 16, another march will take place at 7 p.m. in Greer.

"I know that I have had a loved one pass away from cancer, and that is why I do my best to get involved with Relay," said Brett Seay, senior intercultural studies.

Relay for Life contributes to the fight against cancer in a variety of ways. One of the many methods involves raising money for research through relays.

During the relays, people walk the track while others become involved through various other cancer research.

According to the Relay for Life Web site, "From entertainment, food and games to touching ceremonies and stories of inspiration, there is something for everyone at Relay for Life."

Each relay opens with a victory lap walked by those who have survived cancer.

Later in the evening as night falls, the Luminaria Ceremony, or Ceremony of Hope, allows for time to reflect on those who have not survived cancer.

"It was amazing to meet all of the people at the walk who had or have cancer," said Seay.

According to the Relay for Life Web site, "Relay represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported and that one day, cancer will be eliminated."
