In the fourth century B.C., Aristotle wrote on the art of rhetoric. His work is still considered the single most important work on persuasion ever written.

Ethos, Pathos, and Logos, the three tools of persuasion an orator must rely on, are still praised as the most valuable utilities in the art of rhetoric.

Lambda Pi Eta, the official honor society of the National Communication Association, named for Aristotle's three persuasive ingredients, recognized North Greenville students in a ceremonial induction banquet held in the President's Dining Room Friday, April 4.

In the Lambda Pi Eta induction ceremony, three candles are lit to represent Aristotle's three rhetorical tools known as logic, emotion, and ethics. Dr. Sepko, Dr. Dowless, and Dr. Hagin lit the candles and explained the three elements. Dr. Ecarma is the faculty advisor and announced the new members of the organization.

President Epting, as well as family and friends attended the ceremony in support of the inductees. Dr. Ecarma expressed his gratitude to the guests with a warm welcome.

"The ceremony went smoothly. It was great to have President Dr. Epting and Dr. Dowless," said Ecarma.

As a nationally recognized honor society, Lambda Pi Eta's sole purpose is to encourage the effort of the students they recognize and, as their mission statement says, "Reward outstanding scholastic achievement in communication studies."

All of the members of Lambda Pi Eta have to maintain a 3.25 grade point average in their mass communication major courses to be eligible.

"I thought it was one of the biggest groups, and everyone dressed professionally. I have high hopes for them to integrate the Christian faith in an excellent way," said Dr. Ecarma.

The 13 mass communication students that met the academic requirements this year are all thankful and honored to be recognized by the organization, and will walk through graduation with red and white cords as part of their regalia.
