The Adventure Club hosts various outdoor events throughout each semester for students to get away from books and studies. On April 11, some Adventure Club members journeyed to Paris Mountain State Park to go geocaching.

What is geocaching? Geocaching, (pronounced geo•cashing), requires the use of a Global Positioning System device in order to discover containers with various items.

"The hardest part was actually locating the cache since the GPS is only accurate to within 30 feet of the location," said Matt Hunt, freshman outdoor leadership.

The containers or caches may hold a variety of items but must contain at least a log book.

"The best part for me was reading the log book and seeing what everyone else had written in it. The earliest log was March of 2004," Hunt said.

According to geocaching.com, "The logbook contains information from the founder of the cache and notes from the cache's visitors."

The Adventure Club searched for about an hour for the cache hidden at Paris Mountain. When the cache was found, the participating students replaced the items within the cache.

"We left a small stuffed bunny, a leather pouch with some little toys in it and a small board game. And we took a plastic hippo, a bouncy ball and a yo-yo," Hunt said.

The rules to play geocaching are minimal: take something from the cache, place something in the cache and write in the logbook.
