The North Greenville golf team wrapped up the regular season last Monday by winning the Independent Collegiate Invitational at the Etowah Valley Country Club in Etowah, NC.
Brad Caldwell, sophomore sport management, also won the individual award for best player by shooting a 68-76--144 at the tournament.
The Crusaders' third tournament win of the season did not come without difficulty. Rainy conditions on the first day made play more difficult than normal, and Harrison Martin, freshman international business, suffered a slight tear in his MCL, forcing North Greenville to play only four.
"The conditions were really wet the first day, but I thought the guys handled it really well," said coach Jeff Pitillo.
"[Martin] got hurt, so we had to play with just four. Under the circumstances, I thought we did extremely well because of that. The other four guys really stepped up and came out with a win."
Martin will likely not need surgery, but the doctors will check it again in three weeks.
Brandon Coggins, sophomore elementary education, tied for seventh place with a 73-76--149.
Andrew Beck, freshman business administration, (75-79--154) and Richard Smith, freshman business administration, (78-78--156) finished tied for 16th and 25th respectively for the Crusaders.
The team will now wait to find out whether or not they will be chosen to participate in Regionals.
Because North Greenville plays as an independent school, they have to play their way into the tournament.
Regardless of what happens in the postseason, the team is pleased with the outcome of the season after winning at the Montreat Fall Invitational, Jack Shadwick Collegiate, and the ICI.
They also finished second at the Chick-fil-a Intercollegiate and third at the NCCAA National Championships in Florida.
"We played extremely well this year, and we have a good group of guys that get along well together and play well together and work hard on their games," said Pitillo. "The biggest plus to this year is that they will all be back next year, so obviously we're expecting big things next year."
