Baseball splits two with Chowan

The North Greenville Crusaders pulled out a 3-2 victory over Chowan University on the afternoon of April 18.
Chowan University started the scoring by manufacturing a 2-0 lead in the third inning. After several scoreless innings, North Greenville cut the lead in half in the sixth inning with a solo home run by Curt Marshall, senior elementary education. Cory Hinton, junior sport management, tied the game off a sacrifice fly by Marshall in the eighth inning. Chris Harbit, freshman undecided, then singled later in the inning to drive home Brandon Duckworth, freshman undecided, to gain a 3-2 lead. North Greenville would hold the lead to defeat Chowan.
Grayson Smith, junior mathematics, picked up the win for the Crusaders. He pitched a complete game, giving up nine hits and striking out two batters. Marshall led NGU with two RBI and a homer.
North Greenville and Chowan were scheduled to face off in a doubleheader the following afternoon, but they were only able to play one game of the series due to inclement weather. Chowan University began scoring early in the game with two runs in the first inning. North Greenville replied in the first inning when Marshall doubled to plate Josh Hohn, freshman undecided. In the third inning Hohn hit an RBI single that drove in Hinton.
The Hawks exploded in the fourth inning and added four runs to their score putting them ahead of the Crusaders. NGU was not able to gain the lead and was defeated 7-2. Daniel Goodnight, freshman sport management, took the loss for the Crusaders as in gave up three runs in 5 1/3 innings of relief work. Hohn and Marshall both had two hits and an RBI for the game. The Crusaders fell to 8-34-1 for the season.
The Crusaders are scheduled to play their last game of the season against North Georgia College on Wednesday, April 23 at 7 p.m.
